Repeat Prescription Policy

Please order your medication before you run out and ensure you have enough medication as up to 48 hours (excluding weekends and bank holidays). is required for the request to be processed. Regretfully we are unable to take prescription requests over the phone as errors can occur.

If you are unable to drop or pick up repeat prescriptions you can arrange this for you through your local pharmacy.

Medication Reviews

Patients on repeat medication will be asked to see a doctor, nurse practitioner or practice nurse at least once a year to review these regular medications and notification should appear on your repeat slip.

Please ensure that you book an appropriate appointment to avoid unnecessary delays to further prescriptions.

Prescriptions Charges and Exemptions

Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs).

The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.

NHS charges

Prescription (per item): £9.65
12-month prepayment certificate (PPC): £111.60
3-month PPC: £31.25
If you will need to pay for four or more prescription items in three months, or more than 14 items in 12 months, you may find it cheaper to buy a PPC. The charge for a single prescription item is £9.65, whereas a three month PPC will cost you £31.25 and a 12 month PPC £111.60.

Electronic Prescribing

Birchdale Road Medical Centre Practice is pleased to inform you that we now provide Electronic Prescribing Services (EPS).

Electronic Prescribing enables the practice to electronically send prescriptions to a pharmacy of a patients choice (the pharmacy must also have the EPS system). This makes prescribing and dispensing medication efficient and convenient for patients and staff.

The benefits:

If you collect repeat prescriptions you will not need to visit the practice to pick up your prescription, the practice would have sent it electronically to your nominated pharmacy and you can go straight there.
The prescription is generated electronically, so there is no paper prescription to lose.
You may not have to wait as long at the pharmacy as your repeat prescriptions can be made ready before you arrive.
